Summary

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey meets Dog Heaven in this profoundly beautiful book about the special relationship between kids and dogs, the importance of language, and finding the meaning of life even in its final days。

Poignant, hopeful, and lovingly told, this dog's journey—told by the dog himself in his own unique words—proves that love abides beyond a lifetime, out of sight but never far away。

As a dog and his little girl go on their final walk together, he experiences the sights, smells, and wonders of this world one last time before peacefully passing on。 But for such a good boy (oh yes, he is!) and his foreverfriend, that doesn't mean it's the end。

Offering a unique and noteworthy take on death, this book balances the somber topic with a dog's ever-optimistic viewpoint, all woven together with its unconventional yet fitting approach to language。

Family members, librarians, art-lovers, and educators alike will use this book as an accessible and comforting introduction to the ever-difficult topic of death, discussed and related in a new way with hopeful, uplifting, innovative language。

THE PERFECT BOOK TO TALK ABOUT LOSS: The perennial themes of grief, fear, and death are always relevant and classic discussion topics even in families not yet dealing with death。 The perfect answer to kids' big questions about what happens when we die, this book will be a standard in every home library。

CREATIVE USE OF LANGUAGE: The words in this book are incredibly special, with phrases that conjure how the dog sees the world。 The enjoyable challenge of matching up "letsgoboy" to a walk or "pufftails" to rabbits will make for meaningful discussions on a parent's lap or in a classroom reading circle。

TEACHES CHILDREN EMPATHY: Reading this story from the dog's perspective is the perfect way for young readers to understand that the way another character thinks and perceives the world is different from their own experience。

A BEAUTIFUL DOG STORY: Ideal for readers who love dogs, want dogs, or are going through a grieving process for their family dog, this book celebrates all that is most magical about these animals who are always by our side。

A COMFORTING MESSAGE: It's rare for a book about death to extend beyond the moment of dying。 The continuation of the dog's story past this point makes it special and especially comforting。

Perfect for: parents and caregivers, dog lovers, educators

I was all set to dislike this book, based on the topic。 (Please understand, sad books are totally necessary and needed, but sometimes I just don't want to read them。) But this books happiness shines through the sad parts so brightly, that I loved it anyway。 The doggie language sometimes gets a bit much, but telling the story from the dogs perspective makes sense in the end。 Very nice。 I was all set to dislike this book, based on the topic。 (Please understand, sad books are totally necessary and needed, but sometimes I just don't want to read them。) But this books happiness shines through the sad parts so brightly, that I loved it anyway。 The doggie language sometimes gets a bit much, but telling the story from the dogs perspective makes sense in the end。 Very nice。 。。。more

I was so afraid of sad tears! But this book manages to celebrate the life and loss of pet in such a loving way, that the ending left me with a smile。 We are cat owners, and my kids have already experienced the loss of two beloved kitties, and this book is perfect for pet loss, no matter the species。 The sketchy style of Catia Chien's art brings a gorgeous, dream-like feeling to the story, and Derick Wilder channels the sweet old dogs voice beautifully, and playfully。 Highly recommend for the chi I was so afraid of sad tears! Awesome。 This is the perfect book to soothe the grief of a child, even a very young one, who has just lost a family pet。 A dog narrates a story about his last day on earth, in a simple and lovely manner。 He looks back over his life from the time he was an "awwpuppy" to present times where he has old bones and can only "slowly" now。 He says good by to all his friends and makes sure his "foreverfriend," Little will be well taken care of。 He peacefully closes his eyes and is lifted into the "puffer Awesome。 This is the perfect book to soothe the grief of a child, even a very young one, who has just lost a family pet。 A dog narrates a story about his last day on earth, in a simple and lovely manner。 He looks back over his life from the time he was an "awwpuppy" to present times where he has old bones and can only "slowly" now。 He says good by to all his friends and makes sure his "foreverfriend," Little will be well taken care of。 He peacefully closes his eyes and is lifted into the "puffers" where he watches his family grieve and then experience joy again with a new "awwpuppy。"The soft, colorful illustrations complement the dog's story beautifully。 。。。more

This undeniably beautiful and heartfelt story about an old dog’s last walk but lasting love is a must for any bookshelf。 It is narrated by the dog himself, in a unique language allhisown, and it pulls you into him and his heart immediately。 The art is absolutely stunning。 He’s a goodboy, yes he is。 And this is a greatbook, yes it is。 It will stay with you for a long, no, the longest time。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 So many things to say about this book。 The illustrations are stunning。 The text is lyrical and heartfelt。 Not to mention the cool inferences readers have to do while reading the dog language that emerges。 You won’t be able to get through this without a few tears, but it’s so worth it。 Derick and Catia created something special here。

Holy moly, this is a good book。 Written from the POV of a dog on his literal last legs, he uses his own dog understanding to describe his world, his exit from it, and what he sees and senses after。 Even if you've never loved a dog, you'll love this book and the "gooddog" in it。 Holy moly, this is a good book。 Written from the POV of a dog on his literal last legs, he uses his own dog understanding to describe his world, his exit from it, and what he sees and senses after。 Even if you've never loved a dog, you'll love this book and the "gooddog" in it。 。。。more

Wow! The youth services librarian read this to my preschool, and I was very worried at the start of the book。 Instead, it was a wonderfully pleasant surprise! The kids were engaged, and had good conversation both during and after about their pets and the language used by the dog。

My goodness。 Someone pass the tissues。 Such a beautiful and honest account and story of what it is for an animal to bond with its humans。 The words are poetic, even though they are told from a dogs point of view。 The illustrations are sweeping and beautiful。 It makes me remember what it was to have grown up with two cats。 I belonged to them and not the other way around。 This book helped me remember that no matter how old I get, they will be my forever friends。

For anyone who has lost a loved pet, this is a book that should help to comfort with its happy ending。 This is a sweet story about an old dog who lived a happy life with a little girl - his foreverfriend。 The story is told in run-on words and different words for things - in the dog's perspective。 The dog dies, but the story doesn't end on a sad note。 There is emotion there, but it also shows that it's okay。 Delightful imagery and vocabulary。 For anyone who has lost a loved pet, this is a book that should help to comfort with its happy ending。 This is a sweet story about an old dog who lived a happy life with a little girl - his foreverfriend。 The story is told in run-on words and different words for things - in the dog's perspective。 The dog dies, but the story doesn't end on a sad note。 There is emotion there, but it also shows that it's okay。 Delightful imagery and vocabulary。 。。。more

An old dog takes one last long walk with Little。 They have a slow and lovely time, but that night, the old dog passes away in the garden。 He watches as Little and her family miss him, and seasons pass。 Little will never forget the old dog。 Wasn't expecting this to be a picture book about losing a pet - but I really liked it! Told through the voice of the old dog, I loved his made up words。 I'm never sure how best to use books like this。 Maybe as an empathy builder, or to help a child process gri An old dog takes one last long walk with Little。 They have a slow and lovely time, but that night, the old dog passes away in the garden。 He watches as Little and her family miss him, and seasons pass。 Little will never forget the old dog。 Wasn't expecting this to be a picture book about losing a pet - but I really liked it! Exquisite, dreamy life and afterlife of a beloved dog。 Idiosyncratic text and luminous, joyful illustrations by Catia Chien express joy, love, loss, wisdom, old age, and youth - but most of all love。
